About Steve

Steve Lindhorst

I grew up in Eau Claire, Michigan. I moved to New York City when I was 20 and lived there for three great years. Then back to Michigan for a while - and finally - California, where I live now. After growing up on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, I need to be close to water - and I want it to be to the west of me. It's a comfort thing.

Just like Ben Franklin, I was a printer for many years, until the computer put me out of a job. As a result, I wandered a while, wound up in San Jose, California and took a temporary job with eBay. After three months, I became a "regular" employee and worked as such for about two years. I was the "Advertising Operations Manager" and my small team was in charge of trafficking the banner ads on eBay.com. Eventually, eBay reorganized me out, thanks to one of the worst directors that company ever hired. (No names, but it was a harbinger of things to come for eBay...)

Even though I was leaving as a regular employee, I was hired as a contractor to teach eBay University on the national level. I did this with an exclusive group of five other instructors, including Jim "Griff" Griffith, who by the way is a great person, and truly dedicated to the eBay community. I also worked with my friend Marsha Collier, author of eBay for Dummies.

Eventually, I was asked to be the sole outside instructor for eBay University for Motors, teaching dealers all across the country how they could sell on eBay Motors.

During the "eBay years" I was also invited to speak at many tradeshows and events, including eBay Live! in New Orleans, San Jose, Las Vegas, Boston, and Chicago.

As eBay has outsourced its education to the Education Specialist program, I have done less and less with them as a contractor. This has paralleled eBay's changes and resulting fall from grace in many people's eyes. As these changes have occurred, I have shifted to a more generalized consulting role for online sellers.

I have always thought the small sellers are the people I relate to the most. I'm a small seller, and I get great pleasure out of helping small sellers get their start in ecommerce.

As a kid I never paid attention to sports heroes like other kids. I was into cars. Especially old cars. I was thrilled to be chosen as the sole outside instructor for eBay University for Motors. Since I had personal experience in auto sales, I was able to effectively teach auto dealers to use eBay Motors as an additional sales channel.

I'm a dad, husband, blogger, speaker and instructor. All put together, it makes for a great reservoir from which to draw when I write. My eBooks about selling online include:
