On this date in 1988, Andy Gibb, the little brother of the Bee Gees, died in Oxford, England. He had checked himself into the hospital earlier complaining of chest pains. His death was said to be from inflammatory heart virus.
After disco died Andy Gibb had a pretty tough time in his career. He was more or less "type cast" as a disco performer, so it was hard for him to find work. He did manage to land an attractive girlfriend in Victoria Principal, who was starring in the super hot TV show Dallas in the 1980's. But he got into drugs and alcohol and lost her as well.
When he died, many thought it was drug-related, although that is denied. It is believed though, that the hard-living he did weakened his system so that he was more susceptible to illness.
In the summer of 1978, Andy Gibb was barely 20 years old, and his third single, Shadow Dancing, was the #1 song on the Billboard pop charts. Four months earlier, his second release, (Love Is) Thicker Than Water had reached the same pinnacle, and six months before that, Gibb had topped the charts with his debut record, I Just Want To Be Your Everything.
Nowadays, Andy Gibb still brings back memories of summers in 1977-78. What a sad ending though, for someone so talented.
