Charlie Hustle Takes a Fall: The Sad Story of Pete Rose

March 21st - On this date in 1989, Sports Illustrated magazine broke the news that Pete Rose, had been gambling on professional baseball games.

Pete Rose played for the Cincinatti Reds from 1963 through 1986. He was known as "Charlie Hustle" due to the fact that he sprinted to first base even if he was walked. He was also known for diving head first when stealing bases - something that's become common since Rose's day.

It's unfortunate that even though Pete won three World Series rings, three batting titles, one Most Valuable Player Award, two Gold Gloves, the Rookie of the Year Award, and made 17 All-Star appearances at five different positions, he is not eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame.

In a time when major league baseball players get away with chemically cheating through steroids, gambling on some games (none of which he was involved in) - it seems Pete Rose got a raw deal.

He's still quite popular with collectors, as you can see below.
