Looking at how old the last post is I would say nobody has had anything additional to add to your review. I would like to add that if you become a Promerchant on Amazon and sell non-media you can set your own shipping. But at least with media you can figure it into you cost and know that you will still sell the item.

I agree with Lisa, it shouldn't be one or the other, it should be both.

I started selling on Amazon first, and for things I couldn't sell on Amazon, sold very well on ebay. Both has it pros and cons and you just have to adapt and take advantage of them.

It is not true about selling things a rock bottom prices on ebay. In the last 18 months there are so many amazon merchants selling books that the book selling business has changed literally overnight. Books sell at rock bottom prices on amazon. Books used to sell at good prices a couple of years ago, now the profit margin is really low, making it not worth the effort. It is also hard to distinguish yourself from other sellers on amazon, that I find all the amazon merchants just lower their prices to compete with one another. Feedback is pretty much the only thing that stands out on amazon.

In addition, amazon does not provide enough of a shipping credit for shipping items. Sometimes they do, but more often than not, I lose my shipping credit to their commissions.

Also I have found, ebay buyers are much friendlier and more forgiving, amazon buyers are very picky, and quick to send scathing and accusatory emails. And are quick to leave negative feedback before you even knew there was a problem to fix. Ebay still has a community feel and the ebay customer realizes that some ebay sellers are not big corporate businesses, so maybe that explains the friendlier approach.

For the small ebay business, I have found, consumer electronics, small kitchen appliances sell better/ for a higher price on Amazon. Books, CDs, DVDs current contemporary media are equal on both ebay and amazon. Antiques (all kinds), apparel new and used, baby items, cars, one of a kind items, handbags, housewares, printer toners, hands down, ebay is a better platform.

Good luck selling!

Yes, really interesting stuff - an interesting perspective, as I have mostly viewed the comparison between eBay and Amazon from the point of view of an affiliate rather than a seller. For me the questions are a little different: which retailer are customers more likely to buy from and thus earn me commission? Which site offers better affiliate commissions (eBay, hands down!)? Which has a longer action period?

It's good to see the other side of the coin!

Steve,
Excellent comparison chart! You said : "The important thing to remember is the shoppers are different. While you and I may shop on several sites, many Amazon shoppers are very loyal to Amazon and won’t even visit eBay. Some eBayers feel it would be a sin to shop on Amazon. By selling on both sites, you are potentially getting millions of additional eyeballs on your products."

This is so true.

The question for sellers shouldn't be Amazon OR eBay - it should be one of selling in both channels - Amazon AND eBay (or eBay and Ruby Lane etc., etc. ).

And the only way to find out which is right for you is to test market products on different sites and see how the buyers in your niche market respond.

That's a great objective comparision! Well written, I would also venture to mention seller support on Amazon is world class, treating the seller as an internal customer is such a novel idea, ebay just doesn't get it.

If a were a new "want to be" seller I would certainly feel more welcome at Amazon than ebay, today. My how the times change. Days like this I wonder how I was even able to start a business on eBay.

Sold, Ship now:

PS. Steve, I hear Neweggmall.com is looking for a few good sellers. While the bar is high to get on, the focus seems to be on the sale of goods and reviews, instead of feedback. Interesting that feedback is not used.
