April 5 - On this date in 1977 the United States performed an underground nuclear test in the Nevada desert. The test was part of a series of tests called Fulcrum, and the April 5th test was specifically known as Marsilly. The crater can still be seen with Google Earth.
For some people, that's the boring part. Nuclear tests have been performed for decades, all over the earth. The by-product of the nuclear age is the design it inspired. Amazing designs, much sought after now by collectors. The "atomic" style is typically found in the 1950's, 1960's, and early 1970's. It is known at times by terms such as: atomic, mid-century, and Eames era.
The Eames era refers to designers Charles and Ray Eames. They primarily designed "modern" looking furniture made of molded plywood, plastic resin, and even wire mesh. The term "Eames era" is used a little freely by online sellers and often has no association whatsoever with Eames other than being created around the same time. True Eames designed pieces are extremely valuable - and they look really cool.
So even though the nuclear tests in the desert just left us a radioactive hole - the designs the atomic age inspired left us some amazing chairs, lamps, and clocks.
