Do you have a Goya Guitar? Want one?
Here are the quick facts:
- They were marketed in the United States beginning in the 1950's by Levin Instruments.
- They are named after the Spanish artist Francisco Goya because he featured guitars in his paintings and these look similar.
- It was felt "Goya" would be a more marketable name than "Levin" in the U.S.
- Goya guitars use nylon strings instead of steel strings. This made the guitars favorites of folk musicians.
- They were known for their high-quality, shiny finish.

Greetings; I am a personal property appraiser in Florida working on an estate. Among other things, it includes a guitar used on the movie “Sound of Music”. Its serial number is 179061, Model G-10. It has a plaque that states “Property of 20th Century Fox, Serial # 179061 Goya Guitar-Maria, Sound of Music. As in many movies, I would assume there were several guitars used in the movie. Can you tell me the date that may correspond with that serial number. Also, any idea as to the value of a G-10 used in a movie?
Thanks,
Robert Bass

Hi Robert,
One of the sites I’ve seen where value is discussed is at: http://www.guitarsite.com/database/Guitars/rec/4742/
As far as figuring out the value of a movie prop, you might try contacting the people at: http://www.premierprops.com. They are huge in that market.
Hope this helps,
Steve
