April 20, 1916 - The Chicago Cubs played their first game in what is now known as Wrigley Field. The ballpark was built in 1914, and until 1920 was known as Weeghman Park. The name was changed to Wrigley Field after then owner William Wrigley, Jr. of chewing gum fame.

The game on April 20, 1916 was played against the Cincinnati Reds, and went 11 innings. The Cubs won 7-6.

The first major-league game I ever attended was at Wrigley Field. That was in the late 1970's, and I can remember how impressed I was with the beauty of the place. The ballpark oozed history and seemed park cathedral and part ballpark. I wasn't even especially a Cubs fan, but thinking of the baseball greats that had played there was moving. At that time, old baseball stadiums were still common. Now though, there are only a few left. Cubs short-stop, Ernie Banks apparently had a special feeling for the park as well. He coined the term "friendly confines" for Wrigley Field.

Ironically, it was also on April 20 that Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts and Tiger Stadium in Detroit, Michigan were opened, in 1912. Fenway is the oldest, Wrigley Field is second oldest in the entire league.

Cubs Fans Are Special

When I traveled the country teaching eBay University, I often used Cubs fans as an example. People would ask, "what should I sell on eBay?" I would reply that they should sell what people would buy. As an example, I said anything with a Cubs logo on it will sell on eBay. That used to be almost 100% true. I would scour thrift stores and yard sales for Cubs t-shirts, mugs, etc. and put it on eBay. It always sold, at times for unreasonably high prices. Cubs fans L-O-V-E their team, and show it by paying.

eBay is still the best place to get the real collectible Cubs items. And it doesn't have to be just the Cubs. There are also the peripheral players. Jack Brickhouse, Harry Carey, Ronnie "Woo-woo", even Wrigely Field itself. Even the Blues Brothers paid homage to the Cubs in their movie. They gave their address as 1060 W. Addison St. - the address of Wrigley Field.
