It was the third oldest park in the major league. Only Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, and Wrigley Field in Chicago are older. Now it's gone. The last section of Shea Stadium was demolished today.
Shea Stadium is where the New York Mets clinched and celebrated their two World Series titles, in 1969 and 1986, and where the New York Jets won the American Football League championship in 1968 to qualify for Super Bowl III in January 1969. It was at Shea when in 1973 O.J. Simpson became the first NFL runner to go over the 2,000-yard mark in one season.
It was also the birthplace of stadium rock - when in 1965 The Beatles played their first big concert in the United States. When I lived in New York City in the 1980's, I went to Yankee Stadium (gone) and Shea Stadium for ball games in the summer. I feel, likemany Mets fans, that lost a little piece of themselves when it came down.
