On April 1, 1970, President Nixon signed legislation banning cigarette ads from airing on television and radio. The ban took effect at midnight on Jan. 2, 1971. The last televised cigarette ad ran on January 1, 1971 at 11:50 p.m. during “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.”
Pressure to ban tobacco advertising had been mounting for several years preceding the radio & TV ban. The (currently defunct) Fairness Doctrine had already required one anti-smoking public service announcement for every three cigarette advertisements aired.
As of the 1950's, nearly half of the population smoked cigarettes. That number has declined, especially since the Surgeon General's official report in 1964 that using tobacco causes cancer. By 1970, when the advertising ban was signed, 37.4% of the U.S. population smoked cigarettes. As of 2002 that number was down to 20.8%. A big part of the reduction can be attributed to the ban on television and radio ads.
